Because of this, writing has never been more fun, even after 3 decades! Nowadays, my style has very much because crossbred with my own style from my mass market horror novels like City Infernal and Flesh Gothic, with an infection from Lovecraft and M.R.

But today everything is different because of the so called Digital Age. Back then you really couldn’t write modern horror with a Lovecraftian “sound” because it simply didn’t work. When I started writing 30 years ago, my style was a reflection of King, Ramsey Campbell, and then writers like Elmore Leonard and Ross McDonald. How would you describe your literary style to a person who has never read your works before?ĮL: Every writer’s style begins as a hybrid of stylistic elements from other writers but mine is a little less conventional these days. Therefore, when I got out of the Army, I started writing. It occurred to me then that it might be a lot of fun to be a writer. I have a vivid imagination, so soon I was imagining mixtures of contemporary horror (which was pretty new back then) with Lovecraftian trimmings. It was during these times, mainly out of boredom, my mind would engage creatively and I would craft my own stories mentally. Plus, there are radiated zombies flowing out of Houston causing havoc.-What was the first thing in your life that inspired you to grab a pen or a keyboard and start writing fiction?ĮL: Actually it was a manual Smith-Corona typewriter with a cloth ribbon! When I was in the Army (in Germany in the late ‘70s I was in the 1st Armored Division) I began reading horror fiction, everything from Lovecraft to Stephen King, and every 2 weeks I’d have guard duty, which meant I had to spent 4-hour shifts guarding a tank park. I've often wondered about this survival tactic. The clunk, clunk of the dead falling through the silo's inconspicuous hole in the ground was particularly memorable. They shelter in a functional missile silo at one point. There are some cool elements to this zombie epic that I haven't found anywhere else. John, another survivor, and Annabell, John's miniature greyhound, work together with the narrator to survive, hoping to find some last working vestige of the US government. The unnamed narrator is a naval officer who was just returning home to Texas from visiting his parents in Arkansas when the zombie apocalypse hits. Told in the diary format common to many books of the zombie epic subgenre, this journal depicts one man's struggle for survival. It actually inspired the fourth book of my zombie series. My vision was clogged with the vivid scenes of Bourne's books, legal folders, paper clips, and coffee stains. I listened to this whole series while climbing mind-numbing stacks of backlogged legal work as an Assistant Attorney General.
